Forty Rules of Shams

rules of Shams-e- Tabriz

for a better life from the book, Nation of Love

Rule one

How do we describe God? Do you see him as scary and angry? Or make him gentle and kind? Our description of God is a reflection of ourselves. If we keep his grace and love in mind, these qualities will be strengthened in us, or if you remember anger and rage, you will have a harsh personality. He has his soul in Mademida so His attributes are there in us.

The second rule:

It is possible to walk in the divine way with the heart. Wisdom can not be a good guide. Be aware of your Essence and do not neglect it.

Rule three:

As we know, the Qur'an has several levels for interpretation. The first level is the same as Kahmi and the external perception, the second level and perception is esoteric and the third level is esoteric esoteric and finally the fourth level which is love and is so deep that the soul understands it but does not fit in the body.

: The fourth rule

The attributes of God can be seen in all the particles of this world. Every moment and everywhere! God the Engineer, is everywhere if we perceive God, we are forever!.

Rule 5:

The fifth of the 40 rules of Shams-e-Tabriz

The essence of reason and love is different. He is prudent and walks step by step. He is worried about injuries, but love is not like that. He is prudent and bold.

Abandons himself. Reason is not easily damaged, but love has its own destructive power. But treasure can be found in ruins, so whatever we seek, we must find in our hearts and love.

Rule 6:

Be careful of language and speech. Most disputes and animosities are formed by language. We must be ourselves and words should not be valued too much. The language of love is the language of languagelessness

(Myself (13خود

" I am not in the habit of writing, hardly ever and since the words stay in me, they show me another meaning! "

"I can converse with myself, or just as easily to anyone in whom I can see myself"

The following is about the time when Shams and Rumi were about to meet.

"I was searching for one like myself with the same essences, I wanted to make a Mecca of him and face him in prayer, I had become weary of my own self! Alas if you but knew what I mean by my own self?! But Now, now that I have found My Mecca I am certain that he will know me, he will understand! "

بسمه واحد

MAY THE LORD OF ALL PENS GUIDE THESE HANDS TO BE HONORED IN THIS TASK OF TRANSLATING THE GREAT MASTER'S WORDS HERE FOR KEEPSAKE!

Shams as seen by master H. Behzaad

How does one begin to put SHAMS in words?! The Rumi that the west has come to adore lately through the works of such lovers as Mr. Coleman Barks would not be, had he not been touched by SHAMS-E-TABRIZ! Yet Shams himself says: " It is for the Grace of Rumi, if any should come to hear/read my words"

The name Shams in Farsi and Arabic means "the Sun", that which illuminates the world! Indeed that is exactly what this man did for the world and has not yet ran out of its original force!

For all the records of when and how, we do not have an exact time of his birth, of his personal life, or for that matter his death on record anywhere(reliable). Here is some help, Rumi's timeline is 1207-1273 AD) in his mid to late thirties he met Shams reportedly a 60 or so year old man in the town of Ghoonieh(qunieh) in Turkey.

I shall not give any details as to where and how I will come by the materials I'll be using for this work, I could care less for the "proper" book works or copyrights or listing of the references, for that is not how we work. If the reader of these lines should be blessed enough to have come across this work, let him/her be glad and attentive! Important, is not what book makers keep!

Shams by his own admission was not fond of writing because as he put it "no one understands"! We know that because of his mother tongue (Turkish from Tabriz of Iran), communicating in Farsi or Arabic(though he could read both) was not easy for him.  These being the two major literary languages of the day. But in reality, words never did serve him well, nor did his raggedy looks or mean disposition. Like a true master of time/space he could be in many places at once, travel at will and knew Quantum before Quantum was a science!! How could then a man of such stature communicate in mere words? It would take the silver tongue of Rumi to share Shams with the world. "I am looking for a soul that can withstand my presence and receive my essence" He said just before he embarked upon the journey which would ultimately bring him to his beloved Rumi. ماشاالله

So, friends as this may end up being a book, bear with me and know that from time to time I will add more historical data, but never forget that it is the message I so humbly hope to deliver not facts and figures! This time master touched my life in 1954 for the first time and again in 1984, and has not let go since! In total tears and in absolute awe stricken discipleship, my hands shake as the words get translated! Never mind if you don't get this yet, neither do I!

I do wish to acknowledge and kiss the hands of Dr. NASER-ALDIN-SAHEB-AL ZAMANI for his hard work on the book "THE THIRD SCRIPT" which made most of this possible. This being a blog at Google, the posts are dated as published not in any order of historical or relevance importance. I will however, number each post in the title, and hope that in the event of publication elsewhere(no copyrights for me either, this is free service on my part) the numbered posts are used as an order of publication.

to keep this post as the top post for example, I have given it a published date of Dec,2019! It is a preface of sort after all.

SHAMS'S WORDS ,a mirror?(11)

It seems that to keep this work more fluid, I must post with current dates and trust that when its all said and done, the numbered posts (in the titles) shall serve as the order of reading the book. It has been a while since the last post, so let's get right to it.

Hopefully in this short section I can include a few quotes from the Master and others, if I can find them, to introduce the reader to Shams and his way of speech or conversations. He himself had mentioned that due to his lack of fluent Persian speech (he was a Turk by birth), and also due to the common mans' ignorance of deeper truths, he preferred small sentences, quick one or two liners that gave the listener the answer without worrying about correct grammar or the level at which his audience would get the message. His words were sharp, wild, cutting and even arrogant to the uninspired ears.

"All my words seem to take a God like tone. They come out of me with certainty, with authority"

"Words have limitations, far too much. The field of Intentions is vast, come away from words if you wish to hear me, so you so the vastness of my intent and meaning"

"I have yet to be able to speak, to infer, I wish more could at least listen more intently. Full attention is needed to speak, full attention to hear, Alas..the hearts are mostly shut down, the tongues are sealed, the ears are sealed"

"I have not come for the common man, I have no business with them. My words are for the learned, the leaders and the educators, I am putting my foot upon their artery, pressing!"

" I will hold the Gurus and teachers accountable, and even then, not any Shaykh or teacher, but only the ones who have evolved"

" I cannot always tell the truth, I did a few times and the people threw me out. If I were to be fully truthful about life, the whole country shall disown me. Hear me please, most people are happy with confusions and separatism, Truth of my kind makes them sad. I told a learned one once that he was a great man, one of a kind, he was so pleased and said "I have been waiting to be near you and to hear you". On another occasion, I told the same man truthfully about  his lack of basic reason, he became my enemy, fowl language, is this not peculiar? Yes I must live with the people in separatist ways and lie mostly to keep the peace,  If I wish to speak the truth, I must reside in the mountains, alone"

In his prayers historian (Aflaaki) says; "Shams would pray, O Lord is there any amongst your creation who can bear the weight of my words? Whereupon he received the call to go Rome." Of course he never got there, he met Rumi in Ghoonieh(qunieh) , Turkey and the rest of his life was not the same again!

TIMELESS(1)

Posts from here on out will be short translations with titles that will hopefully match! To keep the posts in order, they will be numbered in the title. Even though the first 10 posts do not follow the actual dates of publishing, we'll do our best to keep the rest starting with post number 11.

If it is to be any thing other than Shams's words like my own words, or historical data,
they would be like these lines. So the post numbers are not historical order of his words.

If there is a picture included in any post, and its yours , Bless You! Anyone may use these posts in any way to extend the Essence of Shams and The Heart of Rumi. Forget about me, OK?

"IF WORDS NEED TO BE SPOKEN, SHOULD THE WHOLE WORLD INSIST THAT I'D BE SILENT. IF I SHOULD BE HUNG BY MY BEARD AND A THOUSAND YEARS PASSED, THE ONE I INTEND TO HEAR MY WORDS SHALL HEAR THEM"

Connection(2)

" They say you need Mohammad or Jesus or Buddha or someone holy to connect to God! I question the integrity of such statements. Does this great Source of life, This Great Creator God not have a simple way of talking to the lonely me directly? Am I not good enough or holy enough? I say go ahead and have your conversations with this Source of life and see for your self!"

The great Sufi poet of Iran, Hafiz of Shiraz has a similar quote about man's relation to God,
where he too states that man must speak directly to the creator of life "grab him by the balls....."and not accept any middle men for this most important sign of faith!

HUMAN-GODs(3)

"I won't say become God, I shall not blaspheme! But behold all manners of creation, plants, animals, and inanimate forms of life; Even all the mysteries of the cosmos, all this is within the HUMAN FORM! And..what makes this form a human , is not to be found anywhere else in the entire universe!"

We need to believe this in a much deeper way, when the Christian God or the Muslim God say that "I created you in my own image" it is no different to me than Shams telling us that "all creation was because of and for the sake of this human form"! Somehow we have survived in an evolutionary way progressing toward becoming little gods if you will. Indeed our higher self is always calling to us to Be Our Very Best. I believe we may not have another chance in another form to have such a conscious relation with our origins as we do not in our human form.

A SHAMS/RUMI STORY(4)

Rumi's books long before Shams, were read and admired by all specially in this town of Qounieh ,to which he was the grand shaykh! His father too was a learned scholar of Islamic Laws!

A short while after Shams's arrival in their lives, Rumi's son Mohammad Jallaluldin (who served as the gofer for his dad and Shams while they stayed in that room in "KHALVAT" ) was being observed and guided by Shams without his knowledge.
One day Shams pulls the boy aside and commands him not to ever read his father's books again! We have to know of course that by then the kid knew he'd best follow this master's order as he was HIS Dad's Master! He went to his father Rumi, and asked for a reason or some relief. Rumi without a blink responded; "If Shams should ask for your arm, you cut it off and give it to him son and ask no more such questions about Shams's orders!" That is how Rumi honored Shams!

That night, Mohammad Jalaluddin dreamed of reading his father's books with eagerness and joy. The following day, Shams stopped the boy and Scolded him for being sneaky about reading his dad's books again! "I told you not to read those books" he said. Jalaluddin had joined the sama'!

HUMAN FORM(5)

"Times are festive because of you! YOU are the festiveness! Time, manifested here in form so that it, may feel festiveness in the human. That "Holy Night" found its holiness within this human form."

ASK WHY, OFTEN!(6)

"Why waste a lifetime learning about the world? Spend most of your life knowing your essence instead! Knowing God or your essence is hard you say? O'fool you are deep, knowing yourself is deep. Knowing yourself is knowing that God! If there is any depth to discover, it is YOU"!

TENDER AND ROUGH(7)

"My reason for meanness and harsh words is to relieve the pressure, left inside me. Not to say that my patience lacks, or forbearance not being of my real qualities".(119 on himself) "I have no relations with sorrow and grief, these are for the masses! My beingness is all JOY inside; why then must I allow negative forces from the outside hinder that?"  A loud word or a rough action,  and all the pressure is released!" YIN-YANG make a perfect circle, beauty is ugly turned around!
Nothing comes from nothing and is naught once again. Shams was famous for being both sweet and sour if you will. "I will hurt the feelings of those I care for the most, if they accept that, then I will consider their discipleship"

MASTER(8)

"What then is the  meaning of a MASTER? Is Master the one with the most possessions and control over townships? Is Master the one with the strongest army?
I tell you Master is the one who is the master of his desires!
Master of his speech, Master of his silence, his bitterness in place and his sweetness timely! Such a man not being a servant to these, is a Master in truth! Else his qualities become his burden to bear."

I have heard this message in another place as: "He who has mastered his carnal self, he has mastered life" The amount of discipline needed to bring the necessary changes at any given crossroad of our lives, is the very stuff of masterhood. The lines between what to do or not to do become greatly diminished as one approaches the age of wisdom (independent of age) acquiring a true state of choice with which comes great responsibility!

TO BELIEVE (9)

"In our ways no one becomes a true believer at once. The seeker believes, then disbelieves, and comes back again to believe!

Each time in his return to "the way" he loses another layer of the carnal self until such time as to become "whole" in all ways."

Seeking perfection goes in stages of self esteem verses flow of events unfolding. Yet we measure success with increased wisdom and mindfulness not in years or medals. Nothing worth having for life is ever easy.

SUFI WAY OF LOVE(10) تصوف عشق

"Boojanib( a teacher) sitting in solitude, he was deep in contemplation and prayerful. It came to him:'Tis you shall not solve unless you see that shaykh', Boojanib again asked 'But how shall I find the Shaykh?' and again the answer came 'you cannot see him, go be with the people, seek all and be in need, with the masses assimilate and be seen, then, perhaps the Shaykh will see you'!"

The sufi way of love and life are in the experience of the act of living a day to day life, in with the people and not alone with some rocks and buildings where no one sees you and no feelings enter when the buttons get pushed. If I am actively being in the "bazar" as it were, The Living Master(whatever our interpretation of Master) will see me, I don't have to be looking hard, just be in need of that love connection to all sentient beings! Through pain and pleasure, life and death!

In shams's way of being, every event is a coded message of how to become the
"whole human, انسان کامل ) , growing in wisdom results in contentment beyond words.

" A monk was in the mountains in solitude, I say he was rock not human, to be wholly human we need to be with other humans who have joy, and suffering, who have love to give and need to feel loved. What business is it of man and rocks? Mingle in with the humans and be uniquely alone!
"
